…“Surviving Bear Island” follows in the vein of books like “Hatchet,” by Gary Paulsen, in which a young boy finds himself alone in the woods, forced to rely on only what he has with him (several times, Greci lists those things), his knowledge of what’s around him — which isn’t always firsthand — and his own wits. Greci has spent time in Prince William Sound, and it shows. He describes Tom’s gradual initiation from the comforts of civilization into stark necessity and the natural world in a way kids will be able to relate to….

“Surviving Bear Island” is an exciting book outdoors-minded boys and girls both will enjoy, and Southeast Alaskans will find a lot they can relate to. It’s fast paced enough to keep reluctant readers’ attention, but it also avoids oversimplification while communicating real-life dilemmas in understandable ways.” ~ Mary Catharine Martin, Book Reviewer for Capital City Weekly.

THE LOST TRIBES

Review date: Jan. 2015

A boy, his sister and their three friends discover that their parents—and they themselves—are not what they seem.

When their uncle challenges seventh-grader Ben and his little sister, April, to beat a special computer game in a week, they employ the help of their neighborhood friends: Grace, Carlos and Serise. Together, the kids race against time to decode hieroglyphics, avoid booby traps and collect ancient artifacts. But as the game continues, it becomes strange, as does their parents’ behavior. They begin to feel they’re actually in the projected images of far-off locations—and sometimes they see their parents while there. But that doesn’t make sense….Though the mystery is spoilered by the flap copy, the fact that the characters don’t figure things out immediately makes sense within the context of the story. While the real action comes toward the last half of the book, the first half should keep readers (at least those who avoid the spoiler) engaged as the game is so interesting. And while Ben is likable, he’s no fearless leader but a fallible boy who does his best to be courageous in frightening situations. That the main characters are of diverse ethnic origins is laudable and a breath of fresh air, as is the lack of stereotypes and clichés.

Well-written and well-paced: a promising start to what should be an exciting and unusual sci-fi series. (Science fiction. 10-14)

Publishers note: The spoiler that appeared on reviewer’s copies of The Lost Tribes has been removed from the book jacket.

SURVIVING BEAR ISLAND

Review date: Jan. 2015

A fateful kayaking trip forces Tom to grow up fast while he faces dangers he only ever dreamed about.

When his mother died in a biking accident three years ago, Tom had to struggle to find his way back to a normal life. Dad was no help, as he reacted to the loss of his wife by shutting down and shutting out the rest of the world. But a kayaking trip in Alaska’s Prince William Sound seems to be a turning point for the two of them, a chance to start living the rest of their lives as a family again. Unfortunately, a choppy sea and a bad accident rip them apart, and Tom is forced to struggle for his own survival on Bear Island. Facing starvation, injury and the eponymous bears, Tom relies on the hope of finding his father to get him through his ordeal. Greci delivers a compelling narrative that manages to keep a quick pace despite being built around one character alone in the wilds. Flashbacks to the moments before the accident and memories of life before the trip work well to explain certain plot points and to add texture and meaning to the first-person narrative. The tension is well-crafted and realistic.

Bear Island is a challenging environment to survive but a terrific thrill on the page. (Adventure. 9-14)

The Lost Tribes by C. Taylor-Butler (available March 2015)

We’ve got a teaser here for you…just something to whet your appetite. Let’s see if the trailer will seep into your bones like it did ours!

It’s been quite a long haul for this book, having begun its life in 2001. The author has a penchant for science and a love for showing kids how things work. Picking up ideas from her travels, one being an exhibit of King Tuts tomb at the World’s Fair in Vancouver, Canada, the fascination with the idea that the pyramids held secrets became real. Much of this and more creeps into the novel of course and the result is a combination of science-fiction, fantasy and adventure, but also real objects and locations that kids can draw from right here on Earth and that historians are still are in awe of today!

As someone who was never been drawn to science, much less science-fiction, I find that changing as I discover new writers that make me want to revisit old ones And we found ourselves racing around the world with these 5 kids as they searched for clues under an impossible deadline only to discover the real mystery lay closer to home …

Besides a great story, the author’s character study impressed us the most but we won’t give it all away here. But have you ever known a mother whose green thumb borders on the abnormal, or a cat who acts more like a ferocious predator than a domestic feline?
